Assistant Scientist - Neutrino Physics at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY

Organizational Overview The Electronic Detector Group (EDG), in the Physics Department at BNL, is focused on the physics of flavor, with expertise and involvement in kaon, muon, heavy flavor, and neutrino experiments. EDG physicists are engaged in all levels of experimental physics including detector design and construction, DAQ and data management, simulation, reconstruction, physics and statistical analysis (including AI/ML algorithms), project management, and collaboration leadership. Group members have major responsibilities on the following neutrino experiments:
the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and its prototypes, the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program (with EDG members on all three experiments:
SBND, MicroBooNE, and ICARUS), Daya Bay, and PROSPECT. The EDG currently has thirty physicists at various career levels and a long history of research in fundamental particle physics. In collaboration with BNL's Instrumentation Division, the group performs research and development in electronics and detector design for liquid-argon TPCs (LArTPC). In collaboration with the BNL Chemistry Department, the group performs research and development on water-based liquid scintillator and reactor neutrino experiments. The group has strong ties to the High Energy Theory Group and the Nuclear and Particle Physics Software Group as well as the Scientific Data and Computing Center and Computational Science Initiative. Position Description The EDG has an opening for an Assistant Scientist. The candidate will be expected to take a leading role in the activities of the group including major contributions to DUNE and SBN, mentorship of postdocs and junior staff, exploration of future physics initiatives, collaboration with other BNL groups, and broader engagement such as education and outreach, DEI initiatives, and scientific service. On DUNE, the candidate will contribute to studies of experimental sensitivity, detector design and construction, and ultimately operations and data analysis. The successful candidate will be able to contribute to operations and analysis of one or more SBN experiments, will have opportunities to participate in other experiments with EDG membership, and will be supported in pursuing new physics opportunities that may arise. The candidate would be expected to expand or enhance the group's capabilities and become a leader in the field of neutrino physics. This position would be under the direction of Dr. Steve Kettell. Position Requirements Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
PhD in experimental particle or nuclear physics Significant record of recent accomplishments in experimental physics Extensive experience in data analysis, detector simulation and/or detector development for particle physics experiments Demonstrated ability to perform research independently and as part of a research group Proficiency with scientific computing and common high energy physics analysis tools Clear and concise written/oral/presentation communication skills Excellent collaborative skills Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Minimum of three years of postdoctoral experience Experience in instrumentation and development of scientific detector systems Experience with particle physics detectors, digital signal processing, detector simulation, event reconstruction, and data analysis Experience with assembly, commissioning, operations, and analysis of neutrino experiments History of original or creative instrumentation and/or physics contributions History of grant applications History of broader engagement (education, outreach, DEI, etc.)
Salary Range:
$80K -- $100K
Minimum Qualification
